Privacy Policy — GutTrack
Last updated: 2026-07-14
GutTrack is a symptom, food, and bowel-movement tracking app published by Lightbulb Labs LLC ("Lightbulb Labs", "we", "us", "our"). This Privacy Policy explains what information GutTrack collects, how it's used, and the choices you have. It supplements (and, for the app, supersedes where more specific) the general Lightbulb Labs privacy policy.
In short: the health information you log in GutTrack — symptoms, bowel movements, food entries, and meal photos — stays on your device. GutTrack has no account system and no backend server for your tracked data, so we never receive, see, or store it. The only data that ever leaves your device is optional, anonymous product-analytics that you must opt into, and it never contains your health information.
Information you create in the app
GutTrack lets you log symptoms, bowel movements, food entries, optional meal photos (from your camera or photo library), and daily notes (together, "Health Data"). Health Data is stored entirely locally, in an on-device database and local file storage. GutTrack does not sync, back up, or transmit Health Data to Lightbulb Labs or any third party. We do not operate a server that receives this information, and no one at Lightbulb Labs can access it.
Because Health Data lives only on your device, your device's own operating-system backup (e.g., iCloud or Android backup), if enabled, may include it — that backup is managed by Apple or Google under their own terms, not by us.
Camera and photo library
If you choose to attach a meal photo, GutTrack requests camera or photo library access for that purpose only. Photos you capture or select are saved to local app storage on your device and are treated as Health Data under this policy — never uploaded anywhere by the app.
Reminders and notifications
If you turn on daily reminders, GutTrack schedules a local notification directly on your device using the operating system's notification tools. No reminder data is sent to us or to any push-notification server.
Exporting your data
GutTrack lets you generate a CSV or PDF export of your own Health Data. The file is created locally on your device and handed to your device's native share sheet — where it goes from there (email, Files/Drive, AirDrop, a message, etc.) is entirely your choice. Lightbulb Labs never receives a copy of anything you export or share.
Analytics (opt-in only)
GutTrack uses PostHog, a product-analytics service, to understand feature usage and improve the app. Analytics are off by default for every user, everywhere, and only turn on if you explicitly enable them in Settings — you can disable them again at any time.
When enabled, the events we send are limited to things like:
- App opened, onboarding completed
- Which screen you're viewing (by screen name only — e.g., "home," "timeline")
- That a symptom, bowel movement, or food entry was logged (just the fact that it happened, never its content)
- That an export was generated, and its format (PDF or CSV)
- That a setting was changed, and which setting (e.g., "theme," "reminders") — not its new value where that value could be sensitive
These events never include the content of your symptoms, food logs, photos, or notes. The PostHog SDK also automatically collects standard technical metadata (app version, OS and device type, and a random installation identifier) needed to make the analytics useful. Analytics data is processed by PostHog Inc. and is hosted on PostHog's US infrastructure.
Information we collect directly
If you contact us — for example, by emailing contact@lightbulblabs.net — we receive your email address and the contents of your message, handled as described in the Lightbulb Labs privacy policy.
How we share information
We do not sell or rent information, and we do not use advertising trackers. We share information only with:
- PostHog, our analytics service provider, and only if you've opted in to analytics.
- Apple and Google, as the platforms through which the app is distributed and, where applicable, crash-reporting infrastructure they operate.
- As required by law, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Lightbulb Labs, our users, or the public.
Data retention and deletion
Health Data lives only on your device. You can delete individual entries in the app at any time, and uninstalling GutTrack removes its local data (subject to any OS-level backup you've separately enabled). Because we never receive Health Data, there is nothing for us to delete on our end. If you've opted into analytics, you can ask us to delete analytics events tied to your installation by emailing contact@lightbulblabs.net, or simply turn analytics off in Settings to stop future collection.
Sensitive / health information
We recognize that symptom, digestive, and dietary information can be sensitive personal or health information under laws like the GDPR (special category data) and the CCPA (sensitive personal information). GutTrack is built specifically so that this information is processed on your device and is not transmitted to, or accessible by, Lightbulb Labs.
Your rights and choices
Because Health Data never leaves your device, you already have full access, correction, and deletion control over it directly within the app. For anything we do hold — analytics events (if opted in) or direct correspondence — you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict its use depending on where you live, including under the GDPR (EEA/UK/Switzerland residents) and the CCPA/CPRA (California residents). We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. To exercise these rights, email contact@lightbulblabs.net.
International data transfers
Health Data is not transferred anywhere — it stays on your device. If you opt into analytics, that limited, non-health data is processed on infrastructure located in the United States.
Children's privacy
GutTrack is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Security
Health Data benefits from your device's own operating-system security (e.g., device passcode and app sandboxing). We recommend keeping your device's lock screen enabled. For the limited data we do handle (opt-in analytics, support email), we use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards, though no method of storage or transmission is completely secure.
Not medical advice
GutTrack is a personal tracking tool, not a medical device, and does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. See the GutTrack Terms of Service for details.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we'll revise the "Last updated" date above; material changes will be highlighted on this page.
